AAG-UCGIS Summer School 2019

Reproducible Problem Solving with CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science

In July 2019, a week-long summer school on Reproducible Problem Solving with CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science will be co-led by the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital and Spatial Studies (CyberGIS Center) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), American Association of Geographers (AAG), and University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). Approximately 30 graduate students and early career scholars will learn to collaborate in developing novel solutions to complex problems and to take advantage of geospatial data science and cutting-edge scientific advances and technical capabilities of cyberGIS (e.g., CyberGIS-Jupyter and Virtual ROGER: cybergis.illinois.edu/infrastructures). Participants will experience the types of collaborative and professional interactions that are key to addressing reproducible geospatial problem solving in the context of computation- and/or data-intensive research involving confidential geospatial data. The program is built on the success of the inaugural UCGIS Summer School in 2017 (https://www.ucgis.org/summer-school-2017), and ideal for those working on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary topics, including but not limited to: data-driven social and environmental sciences, digital humanities,geospatial artificial intelligence, and remote sensing big data.

This Summer School will be hosted on the UIUC campus at Urbana, Illinois, USA from Monday July 8 to Saturday July 13, 2019. If you are a graduate student or early-career scholar new to cyberGIS and geospatial data science and want to learn more about integrating them into your research, or are already working on cyberGIS and/or geospatial data science approaches, this Summer School will offer new and exciting opportunities for your professional development, and will help you build connections with others in related fields. UIUC will offer travel awards through generous support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) for participating in the Summer School.

Award

Awardees will receive NSF travel support that will cover travel costs and shared hotel accommodations for the duration of the Summer School. Travel arrangements will be made directly by UIUC and no reimbursements will be made.

Eligibility

  • Applications will be accepted from current and incoming graduate students and early-career scholars at a US institution (defined as within four years of graduating with their PhD).
  • Applicants who are not US citizens will need to report their visa status.
  • Awardees must be able to participate on-site at UIUC for the entire program.

How to Apply?

Applications are being accepted now. Each application needs to include the following components as a single PDF file.

  • Abstract. A brief statement of interest that explains 1) why you would like to participate in the Summer School and 2) how the Summer School will contribute to your research and career development. The statement should be succinct (not to exceed one page).
  • Short CV. A CV of one to two pages detailing your education and research experience.
  • Letter of recommendation. If you are a graduate student or postdoc, a letter of recommendation from your faculty advisor is required. The letter should endorse the applicant’s participation in the Summer School and explain how the Summer School experience will benefit the applicant’s research. The letter should be signed by the applicant’s advisor and uploaded as a pdf. Such a letter is not required for a faculty applicant.

Applications should be submitted via EasyChair and will be due by April 15, 2019. Awardees will be notified by April 29, 2019.

  • Once you have an EasyChair account you can access the Summer School 2019 submission page.
  • Read the “Overview” information, and then click on “New Submission.”
    • Enter your information under the Author Information section
    • For a title, simply enter your name
    • EasyChair requires you to enter at least three keywords. Enter keywords reflecting your interest areas in cyberGIS and/or geospatial data science.
    • Upload your abstract, short CV, and letter of recommendation (if required) as a single PDF.
  • After you have completed the form, press Submit to submit your application. Press submit only ONCE. It will take time to upload the submission. You will receive confirmation that your application has been received.
